仮に下のようなベン図があったときにどのように説明するか。
用語の整理。
ベン図を説明するときには、次の用語等を知っていると便利。
- left circle, right circle: representing the two sets of data
- Area of overlap (複数の円の重なり): representing data common to both sets
- Area outside of the circles (示された円の外): representing data unique to each set
- Both A and B: A and B are true at the same time. For example: "I want to buy both a car and a house.", "I need both a pencil and a ruler to do this math problem."
- Either A or B: one of two things (A or B) is true, but not both. For example:"You can either eat your vegetables or go to bed without dessert.", "I can either meet you at the park or the library."
- Neither A nor B: none of two things (A and B) is true. For example:, "I am neither hungry nor thirsty.", "Neither of these two options is appealing to me."

Please look at this Venn diagram. It shows us how many people like cats and how many people like dogs. The big circle on the left represents the people who like cats, and the big circle on the right represents the people who like dogs. The area where the circles overlap represents the people who like both cats and dogs.
So, in this Venn diagram, we can see that 18 people like cats, 22 people like dogs, and 8 people like both. That means there are a total of 18 + 22 - 8 = 32 people who like either cats or dogs, or both. And there are 18 people who like neither cats nor dogs.

上の英文は説明なので、何かを強調したいときには、次のように述べる。
Now let's look at the data. The Venn diagram shows that 18 people like cats, 22 like dogs, and 10 like both. In other words, more people love dogs than people who love cats. In fact, 32 people answered that they like dogs. That's 64% of the people who answered.
